What are probiotics?

Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide health benefits when eaten or applied to the body. They are found in yogurt and other fermented foods, dietary supplements, and beauty products. Although people often think of bacteria and other microorganisms as harmful "germs," many are actually helpful. Some bacteria help digest food, destroy disease-causing cells, or produce vitamins. Many of the microorganisms in probiotic products are the same or similar to those that occur naturally in our bodies.

What types of bacteria are found in probiotics?

Probiotics may contain a variety of microorganisms. The most common are bacteria from the Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium groups. Other bacteria can also be used as probiotics, as can yeasts such as Saccharomyces boulardii.

Different types of probiotics may have different effects. For example, if a particular strain of Lactobacillus helps prevent disease, it does not necessarily mean that another strain of Lactobacillus or any Bifidobacterium probiotic will do the same.

Are prebiotics and probiotics the same?

No, prebiotics are not the same as probiotics. Prebiotics are non-digestible food ingredients that selectively stimulate the growth or activity of desired microorganisms.

What is Biostime?

Synbiotics are products that combine probiotics and prebiotics.

How do probiotics work?

Probiotics may have a variety of effects in the body, and different probiotics may work in different ways.

Probiotics may:

  • Help your body maintain a healthy microbiome or help your body’s microbiome return to a healthy state after it has been disturbed

  • Producing substances with desired effects

  • Affects the body's immune response.
