Autoclave tape
Autoclave tape is tape used in autoclaves (sterilization with steam pressure) to indicate whether a specific temperature has been reached. Autoclave tape works by changing color when exposed to the temperatures commonly used in the sterilization process (usually 121°C in a steam autoclave).
Small strips of tape are applied to items before they are placed in the autoclave. This tape is similar to masking tape, but is slightly more tacky to allow it to adhere to the wet and hot conditions of the autoclave. One such tape has a diagonal marking containing an ink that changes color (usually beige or blue to black) when heated.
The presence of discolored autoclave tape on an item does not ensure product sterility, as the tape changes color only when exposed. To steam sterilize, the entire item must fully reach 121°C for 15-20 minutes and maintain appropriate steam exposure to ensure sterilization.
The color-changing indicator of the tape is usually lead carbonate based, which decomposes into lead oxide. To protect the user from lead (and since this decomposition can occur at many moderate temperatures), manufacturers may use a resin or polymer that degrades in high-temperature steam to protect the lead carbonate layer.
